BloodSpell Episode 1

Published 2006

The Blooded are cursed to carry magic in their blood - when their blood is spilled, the magic comes out, whether to heal, summon or destroy. They are hunted by the Church of the Angels, whose Black Monks hunt them through the nights and the slums to deliver them to the Angels.

One young Monk-in-training, Jered, leads the Monks to stop a human sacrifice. But both the Monks and the Blooded have secrets he does not know, and the outcome of his first mission will be very different to his expectations...

BloodSpell, written and directed by Machinima.com founder Hugh Hancock, is the biggest Machinima production ever. And after 3 years in development, it's finally here.

Subject: Tolerable machinima title
Angels and Bloods fight it out in a medieval castle setting reminiscient of Underworld, but set in the middle ages with generic RPG characters.

The dialogue is really very cheesy, and the plot is sort of prosaic. The voiceactors really aren't bad but with the dialogue you'd have to be excellent to make it work. It has about the quality of a B-game cutscene.

As far as animation goes, it's not very good (the engine seems positively ancient) but that's forgivable. Music is tolerable but uninspired. It fits the theme fairly well.

The simple fact is that it tries too seriously to do what it does and trips on its own shoelaces. Not bad for a first effort but it doesn't have the smooth flow of something like Hard Light Film's Deviation ( http://www.hardlightfilms.com/deviation/ ), another machinima title (or even Red vs Blue, although that's a different sort of machinima genre).

I'd recommend checking it out; I'm interested enough to download the next episode and give it a chance.

Okay, its the first part of a first part... and as such, wants to set the tone AND start introducing the Hero, and the motives pushing the Hero through his Journey.

Giving the Author and the Director the benefit of the doubt and assuming there IS an explanatory story coming in future episodes, then my observations and criticisms go to the jerkiness of the Story, (not the animation; I would forgive a LOT more than the few technical gnorfs visible in this medium); perhaps a lack of feel for timing, or seeing the Story as a series of set-pieces...

Exemplum Gratia: Jered breaks in and there is dialogue of the 'many of us can KILL you' flavor, which is spoken... why?

Then, in lieu of the action which the Bloods COULD have been taking to protect their interrupted ceremony, they LINE UP and stare at the single Jered, all looking in the direction of the door through which Jered entered, but NONE seeing the approach or entrance of Jered's backup team...

The timing thing then shows up as crossbow bolts nail and kill Bloods with near instantaneity, BUT there are clanging swordfights going on continually in the background...

My willing suspension of disbelief was NOT abused, however, so please don't misunderstand. These comments are meant to encourage, and mirror with honesty.

I was anticipating Ep.2, and it delivered more.
(Wow! 2,000 downloads and I'm the FIRST reviewer?)
